I thought that the superintendent's recommendation isn't the final say. Doesn't the BOE have to accept the recommendation? As an RCFES parent, I leaned toward wanting the kids to go to Westland. It would be nice to be closer to home, but I worry that a few vocal CCES parents will make those kids feel unwelcome, and will continue to feel (quite irrationally, in my view) that their personal resources are being directed toward lower SES kids.

And personally, I think the MS#2 enrollment projections are likely well below reality given the forthcoming Chevy Chase Lake development (which has begun) and the trends we've seen on the eastern side of the cluster, and MS#2 easily will be OVER capacity from day 1.

You are correct, the new middle will be overcapacity from Day one. You will see portables in less than 5 years. It is also lopsided that all of the diversity is in one school, the new middle. There is no equity between the new middle in and Westland in the new boundary. Months ago I started researching private middle schools because we felt Option 7 was the worst possible option and could not even believe it was on the table because the disparity in capacity and diversity was alarming.

My kids classes have been maxed out and out of control for years due to the high rate of illegal immigration in this cluster that is continuing to explode unchecked. So we are checking out. Not my problem anymore. Rock Creek is going to regret pushing for this. If I had been them, I would have been thrilled with Westland and preferred it. Bigger facilty and less kids. In fact, I am sad my kids aren't going there. RCF made a bad decision for their kids and everyone else's. Now everyone in the new middle will have a lesser experience.

Drama queen.

People need to organize in their communities and their PTAs. They need to write to the BOE and County Council and show up to the meeting for public comments. Based on postings earlier this year, it's clear that people have "worked the process," while the rest of us foolishly relied on the integrity of the committee process actually being honored.

Option 7 leaves the cluster with a relatively white, affluent school at 82% capacity in the west, while committing a more diverse school in the east with three times the FARMS rate, no immersion program, less facilities, and less physical space, to reach 99% capacity in five years. Both schools will have population increases based on planned development, but only Westland, with a larger facility and more than twice the land of the diverse school in the east, will have the capacity to build and grow to absorb its new population. We all remember that, because of the small, sloping nature of the new school site, MCPS construction people testified that building the school there was like putting 10 pounds of sugar in a five pound sack. The school now is being built on every available slope on the site. Any further construction needed to accommodate new students will take away from field space or bus lots, which already are significantly less than what exists at Westland.

Although it is clear the superintendent wanted to serve the transportation needs of one community, he did so at the expense of rationale planning and diversity, effectively elevating the importance of transportation above all the other socio-economic issues the committee considered. Option 1 made the most sense. It very closely provided balance between all demographic variables, and, notwithstanding specious arguments about the availability of public transportation, it caused no one to commute further than they do already.

I think it came down to whether it makes sense to bus the RCF kids across town to balance out FARMS rates a little more. Forget what the rest of Westland wants, I don't think RCF wanted that.

Only poorer people get consideration these days?

Actually, no. Not hyperbole. 100% facts because I have been involved in the process. I attended almost every single meeting and have followed this closely. You are looking at severe overcrowding at one school and major under utilization at Westland and inequity all tbe way around. It is wrong to do this to all of these kids.

According to the documents, under option 7 new MS opens at 99% capacity and Westland is at 82% capacity, whereas under option 1 new MS opens at 83% capacity and Westland is at 96% capacity, so yes I think it's fair to say it's hyperbole to say moving RCF to Westland would avoid severe overcrowding at one school and major under utilization at another. Just like your allegation that illegal immigration is "exploding unchecked" and driving class sizes is hyperbole. From what you've posted here, if you are leaving the school system it might be good riddance.

Hyperbole much? It isn't like it is destined to be Eastern from day one. It will still be mostly middle class, they have just allowed most of the upper class to to stay at Westland .

Immersion students go to Westland now and seem to be fine, so the burden on those students and their families isn't increasing, it's just staying the same.
