It is even better than that. It sounds like Melania actually read the phrases to the speechwriter over the phone. She obviously knew they were Michelle's words.
But there is the underlying issue that Melania did not graduate from college (Although The Donald has promoted that she has). Maybe she does not know what plagiarism is? [I doubt this - but he let's give her the benefit of the doubt]

For what I hope is the final time, the Obama speech and the Patrick speech used the same speech-writer, who essentially plagiarized himself. It's not best practice, but it's also not a big issue. So here's the difference, and it's big: Melania Trump's convention speech copied whole paragraphs from Michelle Obama's convention speech. That's not okay. Don Trump Jr.'s speech was written by a speechwriter who used some of his past material in the speech. You can argue whether that's the height of speechwriting, but there's nothing unethical about it

That is a good question. It just showcases the ineptness of the operation. Anyone can see that if the speech writer heard those words from Melania, as she says, then Melania should have recognized when she re-read the speech (if she's such a big fan of MO) that those were from MO's speech which she evidently watched over and over and copied down. This is the kind of "taking responsibility" that sheds light on the actual issue, which is that Melania should have caught the plagiarism from the beginning -- could have, that is, if she had wanted to.

Hasn't this already been pretty much the hallmark of the Trump campaign? Nothing he says or does seems like it could have been at the advice of a seasoned professional. It's precisely his shoot from the hip, unscripted, unvetted attitude that his followers seem to love. I think they'd be very disappointed if he changed anything about his approach once in office. It's those on the other side who are probably hoping that if we do get stuck with him for president, he'll at least let the professionals guide him.

Actually, I think they made her the fall gal, so really, they are treating her like shit. And as PPs have stated, they won't fire her because she wasn't at fault.
