I went to George Mason and lived at home, but had many friends and met my DH there. GMU has been a great local network and has served me well professionally not to be an introvert and to capitalize on the local resources.

I think at the least this girl should get a job. My parents expected it and would have never tolerated me moping about the house .

Meh. I don't see a problem. I lived in a dorm for two years then lived at home and commuted. If she is happy then who cares?

This is a typical German experience. In fact German gymnasiums (high schools) go to 13th grade so students aren't even at the university until they are a year older than American high schoolers.

But everyone is not the same. Some people do prefer a quiet life and limited socializing, even when young. And being so young, she might jump right into college life next year. She's pacing herself. And I say that as someone who didn't look back after being dropped off at the freshman dorms. I loved the social side of college life, going out everywhere, meeting loads of people, etc.


+1 Some people are perfectly adjusted without friends. More likely, as someone else suggested, she's a late bloomer. I have a boy like that who just loves to stay home (maybe we should get them together). His brother, is out and about with many more friends. 18 is still young, and and nature will take its course.
