There is a link to an actual story about Isaac Kinde, Chief Science Officer for PapGene, recognized in Forbes "30 Under 30," who decided UMBC was a better choice for him than Stanford. Maybe in your world no one turns down Stanford for UMBC, but obviously in his world people do.

So one person turned down Stanford for a commuter school. It's so out there that it's newsworthy. Kid probably didn't want to leave home and rationalized it like mad.

Minority Sanford grad here (Latina). Loved it. I'm not from this area, and have no idea what UMBC is so can't compare. I said above that it's up to OP's daughter to decide -- whatever she chooses, that's best for her.

How "prestigious" are the service academies? Are they on a prestige par with the Ivies?

Well, the last two are free and give you guaranteed employment.

By applying and getting in to Stanford, OP's daughter has proven she's as capable as anyone going to Stanford. While by many objective measures, the resources and connections at Stanford may be greater than UMBC, her personal opportunities won't be any different. There will be professors that will connect her with research opportunities at UMBC and with their friends at Hopkins. She might have leadership opportunities that wouldn't be available at Stanford. Or she might have less concern about money and distance from friends, family and community. Let her make the choice for her own reasons. Life doesn't revolve around your alma mater.

I wouldn't pay for Harvard but I would figure it out for Stanford.
