Chocolate covered macadamia nuts - I buy several boxes at the airport and the European relatives love them - a big hit with all ages! They could buy macadamia nuts, but chocolate covered ones they couldn't. I've also taken silver earrings for the women and t-shirts with either Washington DC or a local college logo (Georgetown) on them for the men - also popular. Baseball caps. Books on the panda bears for children.

Loved reading this thread....but need some additional help. I would like to send a thank you gift to a family hosting my son in Denmark. I just went onto the LL Bean website and they will ship to Denmark, however, duty and taxes must be collected from the recipient. I don't want the host family to pay anything for a gift that I am sending to them. Is this also the case if I send it myself uisng FedEx or DHL?

Abercrombie & Fitch tshirts; maple syrup (even tho often available in specialty sections of large supermarkets), especially if combined with a good pancake mix - love the LLBean gift version which comes in a Bean bag; US dollar denominated itunes gift cards are REALLY popular in my office.

I'm heading to Brussels and per some suggestions here am bringing some BBQ sauce for the men-folk, blueberry muffin mixes and some spring cookie (sugar cookie w/frosting and sprinkles) sets for families with kids, made in the USA gift soaps for the ladies (found some great ones at Homegoods w/ un-European scents like pineapple-mango), and Levi's and Polo clothing for some of the older kids. My former college roommate always wants the blueberry muffin mixes, I think Bisquick would be popular too.

Bring them a bible.

Sadly too many people have turned their back on Christ in Europe, with the current economic troubles the inevitable consequence.

This is one of the most hilarious posts I've ever read on DCUM.

If they are into the outdoors, then maybe some high tech camping gear, or running water belts or golf gear.
My neices ride horses and asked for some horse riding clothing. But I was not able find the brand she was looking for

Obama memorabilia. American Girls dolls are hugely expensive and the accessories are like crack to the girls--don't do that. National Monument Key chains nekclaces, etc that sort DC memorabila has more cachet to a european. If they are girly girls get a pink I love DC shirt.

Definitely marshmellow fluff (I live in Belgium)
And now, do not laugh, my US friends stock me up on Bounce Dryer sheets... There is only one brand of dryer sheets available in Belgium and the scent is not pleasant.

Vera Bradlely stuff isn't a bad idea. I never buy it here, but have brought items as gifts to Europe and Australia and they were well received. For young teens, a tee shirt or sweatshirt with the GAP logo might be a good idea. My Aussie cousins liked those. Otherwise, what about a locally made craft item? I don't know about customs regulations, but it seems to me that you can get most American food items pretty easily in Europe.
