Halle Berry had no business winning that year. There was nothing impressive about her performance at all. And, I can't believe Jamie Foxx in "Ray" won over Russell Crowe in "A Beautiful Mind." It seems that a little preferential treatment was given in these instances, maybe others.
I don't think you saw Ray. Foxx's impersonation was perfect. However, that's not the reason I think you didn't see the movie. Ray was 2005. A Beautiful Mind was 2001. Also, I think there was some controversy around the story, and the Oscars hate controversy.
Yeah, I pointed out my own mistake. But, I did see Ray, and it was great mimickry, but that was about it for me. I am old enough to remember "In Living Color" and I guess I still can't get past how the Jamie Foxx who was in that went on to win an Oscar! But, hey Tom Hanks was in "Bosom Buddies" at one time, so things change!

Oops, wrong year, I meant that Russell Crowe in a "Beautiful Mind" should have won over Denzel Washington in "Training Day." Love Denzel, but come on. I was actually in Hollywood around the time of the Oscars in 2001, and there were billboards everywhere trying to guilt the voters into voting for the black actors and actresses. And, lo and behold, Denzel and Halle both won that year. The Halle one was particularly undeserved. And Denzel was great, but his role was no where near as challenging or as well-executed as Russell Crowe's. It just seemed as though politics were at play.
I am glad you got your year right, but I understand, all Black men look alike. Anyway, there was controversy surrounding the character that Russell Crowe portrayed in "A Beautiful Mind", and the Oscars backed away. Also, Denzel was awarded the Oscar for "Training Days" for his accumulative work, just like Leonardo will receive the Oscar for his cumulative work this year. Denzel had been snubbed so many times for better acting roles than TD and the Oscars were running from ABM controversy. Coincidentally, LC has also been snubbed for better performances than Revenant. FWIW, I was not happy with Denzel's win and thought he should have one for Malcom X, Pelican Brief, and Hurricane.

Way I see it if you're a teacher and you know you do a great job with/for your students you'd like to be recognized by the school sometimes when they have "Teacher of the Year" awards. To not even be considered for the award and rarely if ever see any other black teachers ever get nominated at your school which coincidentally has only white administrators who determine the nominees (Hollywood) would have you a little sour.

Please read further up this thread. It's partially about the actual nominations (no Idris Elba, Michael B Jordan, etc), but also about the lack of opportunity for actors of color. If actors of color aren't cast in Oscar-worthy roles, they can't be nominated for Oscars.

LMAO my girlfriends and I still laugh at that phrase. Seriously she was not good in that movie, probably the worst actor in the ensemble. Even Diddy did a fairly good job considering he is not an actor. Makes you wonder if the academy was living out some fantasy when they watched that movie and saw Billy Bob and her together.
It was also odd that Halle Berry did win the Golden Globe or any of the other precursors to the Oscar for that role. The decision to give to her seemed very political. But, I never really cared for her or her acting, so I am probably biased.
Sorry, meant to say that she DID NOT win the Golden Globe or the other awards. Sissy Spacek did.

That was a consolation prize Oscar for Denzel (not the first time it's happened though) and that was also around the time Russel Crowe started showing his behind in public. Politics are always in play.

Should they pick some ethnic actors just to round out cast? I guess I just don't know what people expect.
I expect (if by which you mean want) movie production companies to select more scripts that have strong roles for actors of color. An actor can't compete on his or her own for an Oscar. They've only got a shot of winning if they're cast in a movie with an excellent script. If most of the good scripts that are chosen for high budget films feature white lead characters, then the ony "amazing performers" people will know about will be white.
If by expect you mean what I think will happen, then I expect nothing to change.
It's not just selecting more scripts for actors of color; it's also giving actors of color chances for roles that have nothing to do with race. Why not cast Idris Elba as Bond? Why not cast Amandla Stenberg in a role written for a teenage girl instead of Chloe Grace Moretz? (That's just an example; I like Chloe Grace Moretz.) Why not cast any Asian/Latino/any other race actor of equal talent in any role?
