Twenty years ago my husband (as a newly commissioned USMC officer) made $24k/yr. Today he makes $424k/yr.

I made $67k/yr then. Today I make "only" $175k/yr. Good thing he wasn't so shallow, hunh?

FWIW, at 26, I made 30k per year. I am 41 and make 300k per year.

I am not saying this to be judgmental, because I think its good you have recognized that material wealth is important for your happiness. It's better that we all recognize what we want from life than to shoehorn into what people think they should want. In D.C. there are men who have substantial means that are available. Assuming you are in your mid-20s too, and reasonably attractive, you can likely find a man in his early to mid-30s that is already financially successful.

I would be grief stricken to have married someone who placed a value on luxury. But there is someone for everyone.

You make far, far less than him and you are basically the same age. If you want great wealth, what is your own plan to become wealthy other than marrying some dude to support you?

Joining in with those who roots for him to drop the materialistic, greedy, lazy girlfriend he has and find someone who deserves him.

He's not poor. Don't listen to DCUM. He's young and that actually is a pretty good salary.

The bigger question is should he marry you. The fact that he isn't poor by any means (just isn't rich) and it concerns you enough to post a question on a forum shows that perhaps you are shallow and materialistic and he'd be better off with someone whose values matched his own.

Depends on what you want out of life. If you want to be a SAHM, that salary won't do. But, if you're like many other families, if you both work, you can make it.

Also, does he have potential.? Does he/you have an advanced degree? Why would you think he won't make more?

He has a masters from the school of foreign service. It's a great program but it isn't a JD or an MD.

So, you make 45K. What is your earning potential? 26 is so young. You sound like you might be high maintenance, play keep up with joneses too much. I hope he dumps you. I'm a woman btw.

I agree with other PPs - if he worships the ground you walk on, that goes a long way. I understand you don't want to struggle financially in the future as that can be quite stressful on a relationship, but you don't sound like you can bring much to the financial table, either. Or, are you just thinking that you'll be the sahm who can go to yoga, drive a nice car, go on nice vacations and put your kid in full day daycare or have a nanny, and you want your DH to pay for everything?
