Sounds like it is a control issue. Back off. Either stop buying the soda or allow the kid to eat and drink what he wants at will. Why are there restrictions on foods kept in the house? Tell him what the limits are and he won't feel like he has to sneak.

I may be naïve--but people still buy soda?

OP, you don't live in DC do you?

WTF? Stop acting brand-new

I know, I hate pretentious morons like those two pps. I guess they don't shop in ordinary grocery stores, gas stations, movie theaters, non-fine dining restaurants, or any other place that sells coke or Pepsi products. Way too fucking cool and important for that!

Right?! WF has soda, Yes does too....it's just made with sugar instead of HFCS. If I didn't have soda, what would I put my Capt. Morgan in? I mean, ginger beer is soda, after all....and I certainly won't turn down a whiskey and coke.

good day, uppity thots.

I can't believe that DCUM knows and uses that word

He's not gaining weight solely from soda. Address the whole issue, not just part.

Not the pp you are talking to, but seriously? The poster was just explaining why they are tough about limiting sodas. That does not mean they are not doing other things. Plus it often is the little things that add up to being overweight. Getting rid of small bad habits add up.

No more soda in the house. If he can't follow the rule to ask first, then you remove the temptation utterly. Given that soda is total junk, this shouldn't be a huge hardship. Replace the soda with flavored seltzer water.

This. I used to sneak sodas all the time (we had a one soda per day rule- I would usually have 2-3). No way would I have had that problem if I had had to bike to the store to buy them with my own money.

Op, I'd just stop keeping soda in the house for now. Kids this age are still learning impulse control. Tell DS why, and tell him you may start buying soda again at some point in the future (however long you determine) and that you hope he chooses to follow expectations at that time.

have you tried seltzers in the can? Ds might enjoy those and they have little or no sugar.

Don't have it in the house. Or you could bring in a week's worth, make sure he knows that it's to last all week, and if some isn't available to someone else later that week, x will be the consequence.
