Clan of the Cave Bear was on my parents' bookshelf but Plains of Passage came out when I was in 6th grade and that's when I read it.
Ayla was awesome, she did everything, the original Mary Sue. It's not a bad reference.

Yes, if I saw Ayla I would assume it rhymes with Kayla.

There’s an amazing movie released in 2017 called Ayla. You can watch the trailer on YouTube if you search “Ayla movie”.
After watching it you’d definitely know how Ayla should be pronounced. It’s a Turkish/Hebrew name spelled exactly how it should be spelled, as they use English alphabets in turkey too, and it’s pronounced Eye-luh. I know in English some people mispronounce it, but they just need to learn how some names are pronounced in other languages and respect that instead of insisting it should be said the way the prefer to read/say it!

I like the names. I have never met anyone named Ayla who pronounced it like the ending of Kayla or Layla. But other posters have said that would be a concern and I think it'd be so annoying to always have people mispronounce/mishear/ask you/your daughter to repeat the name for her entire life. So, that said, I'd probably go w/ Isla since that's the more popular spelling. Or actually, I'd probably go w/ a different name altogether because people would mess Isla up too.
