It's too late now to change it so I think you just have to own it. FWIW - I think I would let my DS do what you describe at that age (he's much younger right now).

Maybe this has been said in these 5 pages, I don't know.

I think that traveling with a romantic partner and romantic partner's family is actually great life skills preparation. Sure, they are still kids, but it sounds like he learned some pretty important skills on this trip:

- budgeting time and money for vacation
- planning things himself
- interacting with "in laws"

Those are things that will be good for him as an adult, and also good for his future romantic partners, whether this relationship lasts or not.

Every American should spend a gap year overseas. Traveling anywhere. Working, volunteering. The USA would be light years ahead socially, morally and technologically if kids had this experience.
