I've heard the same thing. My sister had the names Briar and Arian chosen for her kid's name.

Speaking as an SLP, all uncommon names with bunches of R's should be out. Briar, Aurora, Roderick, etc. R is one of the latest sounds children acquire, one of the most common speech disorders children have, and you often hear distortions lingering into adulthood. You want your child going around introducing themselves as "Bweye-ah" or "A-oh-ah" and shedding tears of frustration when nobody can understand what the heck their name is? "Not A-wo-wah! A-oh-ah!" Ugh.

Briar means a thorny bush. Why call your kid that.

I can see Briar Rose as a girl's name but only if you're gonna go the two name route like Anne Marie and not just call her Briar.

Briar as a boy's name isn't as weird to me as everyone else. But that's probably because of the Circle of Magic series by Tamora Pierce. It had a lead character who chooses Briar as his new name when he becomes a mage.

If you like it go for it.

I actually think it's cute as a girl's name. For a boy, I'd go with Byron.

My brother had a pony named Briar. My pony was called Bramble. These are cute names for animals.
