8-10% off the top goes to the Diocese (Arlington)

Restricted funds (building, etc.) do not have to send that amount, so usually give more generously to these funds than the regular collection.

Not sure if this has come up in the past few pages of posts... but if you want your money to go directly to the parish you attend and NOT to the diocese, apparently (according to friends), you make your donations on Christmas and Easter. Those are the days they also do the "diocesan collection" or "Bishop's collection" -- that's b/c they have an arrangement with the parishes that the parishes get to keep the take on Christmas and Easter.

So, if there is some reason you don't want to support your larger catholic administration, that would be the way to go.

We used to give $5 a week. I don't know what our HHI was, but it was definitely less that 75k.

We are a family of 5, HHI 110k. We give $50/week. We volunteer at our parish and see the money used in lots of good ways.

Why would you continue to practice knowing the church abuses nuns?

I find that hypocritical. Your $5 is still funding those hateful practices, you do realize, right?

Agree -- it's time for the $5 giver with the abused nun sister to work up her courage and leave the church.

DOn't worry - you won't go to hell. Think about it -- the people abusing your sister will go to hell, if there is one and if God (if there is one) is just.

Same here!

My great-aunt was a nun for many, many years. She was very happy in her vocation and eventually moved to her community's retirement home where she was provided with transportation to medical specialists in the city, cared for very well, and indeed loved by her fellow sisters to her last day. I don't think she ever felt any negativity toward the church.

For reference: HHI is 150K.

That's low for your in income.

That's insanely low for that income. We make about that much and we put in $!00 per week or $500 per month.

That's college savings.

you could opt for a state school and give more to the church.

State schools are still expensive.

You could have you kids pay for it themselves by working and taking out student loans. This would free up money to put towards your eternal salvation

$100 per week in the collection. Additionally we find people in need to give cash to each month, which averages out to about $300 per month. Plus some other random charities. HHI is $200k. I've always been curious about what other people give, too.
