I'm the PP the OP was responding to and that was my exact response when I read this. On a family vacation where there is apparently nothing more to do than swim and enjoy the ambient nature (but definitely don't actually DO anything to engage with nature), she has better things to do than spend time with her kid. Yikes

OP, the possibilities ARE endless, you either lack the imagination to see that or just don't want to go on this vacation and you want the kid's arm to use as an excuse. So does this mean you'd also be forfeiting the airfare to FL, too?

Hopefully, my friends are more understanding than you. When the other family decided to join us we could have said "no" too. Because we already booked a house and it's a little tight for so many people. We could have said they were "difficult" because twice before they said they would not be going. But yet we agreed. Because this is what friends do for each other. And because things happen.

Well, as the responses are showing you, this is an optional cancellation, not a true emergency. Because you are electing to avoid going rather than having an actual emergency that bars you from going, there is no way that you should ask for a refund or ask the other families to cover the costs because you don't want to be bothered to find alternative ways to entertain your child. Frankly, if I was one of the other families and you asked for a refund, not only would I not cover for you, but I would probably not want to include you on vacation plans in the future as you seem like a difficult person to deal with.

if i went to FLA in June (almost hottest part of year) - i would go to the beach early in the day and late in the day. cast or no cast. find something else to do during the hottest part of the day.

but again - this all digresses from the original question about refund. no its not fair

I do. Baby of the family can't get in the water and helicopter can't bear for her to have to watch her siblings having fun without her and the spoiled fits that will ensue if they go. Better to cancel and make everybody else in the family suffer than cause distress for snowflake.
