Personally I think humans are more important than floors. I let my son practice riding his scooter when he was little in the house. It helped him learn to balance really well. At age ten, he is too large to do that now (he would want to go too fast). If your child is practicing and not going too fast, I would let them.

PARENTING fail? Why? Residence owner/renter fail, if anything. Roller skating in the house harms the floors, not the children.


Because contrary to the belief of way too many parents today (my oldest is 26), part of your responsibility to your children is to TEACH them how to behave. Children need to be taught that roller skating inside a home is not ok. Neither is playing basketball, climbing on furniture, or screaming. When I read things like this I wonder - Does anyone actually parent anymore?


I would say no until I read this. We have a basement with high ceilings and one large room with a basketball hoop. There isn't anything else in the room. I guess it depends on your house.

If I had a big house than the answer would be yes, I would allow kids to roller skate in the house. But, alas my house is small so the answer would be no. Didn't Amy Carter roller skate in the East Room of the White House? Now that would be fun!

Not sure why you felt the need to drag up a two year old thread for this, but...

after going to a skating rink birthday party DH got out DD' old (and unused) roller blades and the kids had a ball skating around the house in them. Our floor plan allows for laps and there were no issues with the wood floors or bumping into things.

No!

Also, not just because of the floors - what about the stuff in your house? What if the kid crashes into a plant, a TV, floor lamp etc? It's so easy to pick up more speed than intended on skates and if the kid crashes into something that shatters it could be painful, expensive or both.

I can't believe adults are even having this discussion! No, just no.

My 7 year old skated in our house on our tough vinyl planking floor all afternoon for the first time today. All I could think was, don't hit the corner of the table, watch out for the corner of the tv cabinet. aughhhh. I don't think its very safe. If her head it the corner of some furniture, it could be a serious injury or lost teeth.

I let my kid do it when he had those dumb Heelys (Heelies?) and when he was first learning how to use his wave style skate board - it seemed preferable to having him fall off of it on the street. My wood floors were never particularly nice and they are no worse for wear.
