ah...all those schools being mentioned, I did a few threads back - forgot Blair though, SJC and Dematha. Didn't see any diversity in Churchill or Whitman or GZ, not too sure about WJ. Don't remember seeing any AA on the VA teams, but will take a look this Saturday..

Actually just take a look here as most schools are represented. http://www.sportgraphics.com/events/stotesbury-cup-regatta-2014

I agree. Holton-Arms crew team looks like a Benetton ad.
Capital Juniors is also somewhat diverse. Still majority white but overwhelmingly white.
Sorry, not overwhelmingly white.

My kid rowed at Holton and they did have a very diverse team as do other crew teams in the area. Check out Wilson H.S. for example. One of my neighbors was the first African American who rowed for USA in the Olympics and there is a boat named for him down at the harbor. He rowed for GW and played football at Wilson before getting into crew. Super great guy.

And everyone had a good long view of them because they were going so slowly behind the rest of the pack

+2. Not the Holton booster and don't even have a kid there. I've seen them at Regattas and they are very diverse.

Some crew teams go to FL over spring break. Ours stays local and practices here pretty much all day.

That spring break trip sounds like fun, what does it involve?

Only out of town trip we've done is Stotesbury...

How expensive is it for your kid to do crew in HS?

Our DC is in a public HS crew program. There's not a lot of explaining about shifting, last minute changes to who is in boat, etc. Suffice to say if you miss a practice for ANY reason - including illness or another school activity where you help win a first place award for the school -- you are out. And they don't explain. And they don't publish the rules. DC just figures out "if I miss practice for any reason, I don't row" and the coach doesn't explain why and doesn't talk to me because he is busy with the kids who will row at the next regatta. This makes sense for rowing because with every practice the group gets more used to each other. And every time your DC is locked out there's a chance the replacement does better and keeps the slot. Kind of like orchestra chairs. If you didn't show up to defend your chair, you lose it. And the conductor isn't going to spend a lot of time explaining that. And he's not going to spend a lot of time focusing on last chair of that's where you land.
