Um, I live a few blocks north of Walter Reed. It is convenient for some of us--those who live in Shepherd Park/Colonial Village, Takoma, Brightwood, 16th Street Heights, etc.

There is a list of about 7 or 8 buildings which DCPS has marked as surplus. DCI and others are free to inquire about those.

Don't you just love the magic of the mystical "They" figure! To him/her/it/them or through him/her/it/them all things are possible.

That's all well and good unless you live near the blighted Shaw Middle School. which is exceptionally bus and metro-accessible and is right now, doing no one any good. Not to mention leaving a big middle school-sized hole in center city.

I agree that it's not going to be offered to charters anytime soon, but it also seems so shortsighted to mothball it indefinitely given the boom going on in the neighborhood.

It is so far down the list of DCPS priorities, not to mention the fact that there are a bunch of under-enrolled DCPS middle schools that already exist and other new ones in the pipeline/to be filled - see Brookland, Ward 4 Middle School etc.

PP who posted the info about DCPS plans here. I agree with you, I think it's real pie in the sky type stuff, considering how underenrolled Cardozo (the current middle school for that part of the city) is. But it means that the building won't be surplused and offered to charters anytime soon.

I can't hate on a plan that may add a good middle school to the mix.

But I would love a better space than WR!

That building is currently allocated by DCPS for the future "Center City Middle School".
