Yes, really. As an American citizen, it'd be pretty easy for you to relocate to Nigeria and live the diverse life. If you choose to stay in the US, realize that NW represents our country much better than Shepherd student population. Leave "upper caucasia" at your peril.

OP, I obviously cannot predict the future, but if the school is "only" 79% AA now, it has already become quite a bit more diverse in the past five years. When we were looking for a house in 2010, it was 95% black.

NP here. Shepherd is a fantastic little school. We're in-boundary with a very happy kiddo there. If sending your kid to a high-achieving International Baccalaureate school that's 79% Black is a problem for you, maybe it's not a good fit. I will add lots of diversity there, from longtime DC families to those who speak Spanish, French, Amharic and others at home. The school will continue to attract lots of smart and engaged families whose kids will get an excellent education.

And if you really want to get a better feel for it, it's not going to happen on DCUM. Contact the school and take a tour. The principal gives them herself, even after the lottery. Spend time talking to parents at the playground next door. That's how we fell in love with it. Best of luck.

you can find an honest answer to your question on DCUM, where I read posts from AA parents questioning whether to send their AA child to a predominantly white school (even Janney, there were posts recently, with some posters saying that AA kids IB for Janney go OOB to Eaton precisely because they do not want to be one of the few AA kids in a school predominantly white). so yes, sounds like this kind of concern (being the only XYZ child in a class where all other kids are another "race") is shared by people of various backgrounds, and is not necessarily a sign that OP is racist (unless you conclude that an AA family who does not send child to Janney is also racist)

I don't see those parents post thread after thread speculating on whether or not the demographics of Janney/Lafayette etc will soon change in their favor. That conversation only happens with EOTP schools.

Correct, but that is a function of the demographic trends in DC, not a result of the mindset of the different groups.

OP, if you're seriously interested in considering Shepherd, I'd suggest you contact the PTA President and ask to speak with other parents. There aren't many Asian students at the school that I've seen, but there are a good amount of biracial students--including Asian/white, if you wanted that exact perspective. I'm sure the PTA president could put you in touch with folks who'd be happy to speak with you.
