Wow, you are really focused on this question OP! Before I offer my answer, I'd like to know why you're so curious about this?
It started out as a game to see what lengths people were willing to go to get into their dream school. It os now an argument about house prices. I thought it would be fun to break the ice while we await our lottery results. Guess we can never have fun on DCUM.
OP, the thread is fun even with the house prices discussion!
NP then start your own thread. Not many can afford to pay $800k for a house as we are maxed in our $300k rowhouse. I would sacrifice $15k of my savings to guarantee a spot at our #1 charter school. Why does everyone have to high jack? Why not create a spin off thread?
If you get your undies in a twist because people on an anonymous internet forum don't stay exactly on task on the conversation you started, you are setting yourself up for some *very* uncomfortable undies. Bingo. I think yall are saying the same thing. A PP said that it's not all about schools. People aren't paying a premium just for schools anymore (see Brookland and Bloomingdale), then another poster insisted that it's impossible to get a larger house in JKLM than Bloomingdale all things equal.
How can you agree with this statement and at the same time argue that "people aren't paying a premium just for schools anymore"? If it is true that these houses in JKLM would be cheaper if they didn't have JKLM, it proves that people ARE still paying a premium "just for schools". Along with premiums for other amenities, obviously.

I meant the two PPs who keep insisting that that "Janney is more affordable than Bloomingdale" (which may or may not be true), in an apparent effort to deny that schools are a crucial factor in determining prices. Yes, people do still pay a premium for schools, but they are also paying premiums for other things that might drive prices up beyond some of what you get WOTP. NOBODY on this thread has argued that JKLM is more expensive than all other places in the city with undesirable schools. That doesn't mean schools aren't a crucial factor, along with the metro. That was my point when I said that these AU Park houses would be a lot cheaper if they didn't have either.
Then are you the same one that said the cheaper Lafayette houses were of no use because they don't have metro access?
No, I never said that. You really can't read. I said they are not equal to the Bloomingdale houses (among other things) because they lack metro access. Sounds like this whole issue too complex for you.

If paying this amount actually were an option, I'm sure it would affect home prices in the areas with better schools. I would imagine that those areas would get cheaper because for a mere $15, you can buy into your dream charter and live anywhere.

We have friends that live in SE that spend $10k/year for an "eh" private school. They would easily give one year tuition to go to YY. (They can't move for other reasons).
