Over 800,000 Muslims in Chechnya marched in protest over the Hebdo cartoons. The protests have been mostly peaceful though.

To be fair, they burn churches and rape and kill and persecute Christians in Muslim countries all the time. It's not just because of Charlie Hebdo. I'm an Atheist so I have no allegience to Christians other than I don't think they should be treated like that in Muslim countries. People should be free to believe and practice whatever they want, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. Christians are being murdered and raped daily over there just for being Christians and that is a travesty. They are prevented from getting justice for these crimes just because they are not Muslim, so the police intimidate them and don't help them. Yet, it gets no press or attention. That is absolutely disgusting.

You know what fosters islamaphobia? Calling for the hanging of cartoonists and saying that cartoons are the worst form of terrorism. It's that sort of absurd and violent thinking that makes many people uncomfortable and scared.

The reality is that someone could publish a cartoon of Jesus raping a little boy (as political commentary of the Church's sex abuse scandals) and while some Catholics might be offended, none of them would take up arms and shoot up an office. Honestly, as a catholic, I would roll my eyes and shrug my shoulders. What the hell do I care what some cartoonist draws? It's meaningless. It has zero impact on me of my faith.

I am skeptical about the “threats” made. Were the “threats” from alumni saying they would withhold donations? There has been no concrete statement about the alleged “threats” that I have read...

So, what were the threats? Were police requested as a precaution?
There is simply not enough information to come to any conclusion.

Why do you call it “terrorism” when the authorities have not been candid about the “threats?” Nothing I have read leads me to believe it is “terrorism.” And, how does it stifle free speech? You do realize that Duke is a PRIVATE university, right?

+1 Rising Islamophobia. Vox stated that they didn't receive any threats from their Muslim readership about posting the CH cartoons but received many threats for covering Islamophobia.

Writers at Vox have indeed been bombarded with threats for our Charlie Hebdo coverage. But not one of those threats has come from a Muslim or in response to publishing anti-Islam cartoons. Revealingly, they have rather all come from non-Muslims furious at our articles criticizing Islamophobia.

Our coverage of Islamophobia has brought a very different response. Articles decrying anti-Muslim bigotry and attacks on mosques have been met with dozens of threats on email and social media.

The most common states a desire that jihadist militants will murder the offending writer: a recent email hoped that Muslims will "behead you one day" so that "we will never have to read your trash again." Some directly threaten violence themselves, or imply it with statements such as "May you rot in hell."

Others express a desire to murder all Muslims — one simply read "I agree with maher Kill them all" — also often implying the emailed journalist is themselves Muslim. One pledge to attack Vox writers begins, "Fuck you and any cunt who believes in allah."

As is often the case, the strongest threats have been reserved for women. One writer received a message arguing that someone should "put a gun up your ass" to make her understand terrorism.

Ironically, these threats are typically couched in arguments that Muslims are inherently irrational and violent. Further, threats made with the explicit intention of silencing journalists from discussing Islamophobia are positioned as necessary "defenses" of free speech against the threat of Islam. The people making the threats seem unaware that they are themselves seeking to curb the very free speech they pretend to uphold.

Protests have been building in the Muslim country since the French satirical magazine revealed it would feature a depiction of the prophet on the front cover of its "survivor edition", published on Wednesday in response to the Islamist terrorist attack on its Paris headquarters.
"AFP photographer Asif Hasan suffered wounds resulting from gunshots fired by ... protesters, police have not opened fire," Abdul Khalique Shaikh, a senior police officer in southern Karachi, told Reuters.
