Right, like gun owners never leave guns unsecured. That never happens. I say this after having gone through three straight years of removing a handgun from the night stand at FILs house. MIL doesn't seem to ever know it's there.

Yes. I have reason to believe that reminders are necessary. My mom used to carry her handgun in her purse (loaded, does not have a trigger lock). She forgot it on her nightstand one year, which promptrd the yearly reminders.

And i don't feel superior. I love my family and enjoy our time outside the city. I've even gone out shooting with them and had fun. I just don't understand the unwillingness to give me frank answers. One family member has been helpful in discussing his plans for future storage, but it's cost prohibitive so far (didn't realize safes were so $$). So I know what he's doing in the meantime. But it takes a few rounds of questions for him to open up.

OP, I think if you'd mentioned this in your initial post, the tone of the responses might have been quite different.

You can bet that there are more guns in the hotel than in her relatives' houses

So what if OP is considered rude or condescending by her relatives? That doesn't mean they get to be lax about gun safety. If she was rude and condescending about seat belts, it would still not be okay not to wear them.

that won't address the problem. They won't be spending Christmas in a hotel.

Really it is a childproofing issue, not a gun issue. I had the same w/my parents over TG. told them a few times they needed to get a gate for their stairs. We show up--no gate. They don't want to install one and affect the resale value of the house (?????) We pointed out to them the holes from the previous owner's gate that didn't lower their price, but it wasn't until we made them run interference between the toddler and the stairs for 45 minutes that they got it. Gate installed the next day.

Unfortunately with guns you can't demonstrate the risk that simply, but really it is about them just not remembering how into everything kids can be,and not thinking the way they are doing things is unsafe.
