Don't give her a present next year.

Those who try to be the bigger person only cater to the rude people's behavior. Respond in kind, and they'll notice it's not ok to act like that.

My parents don't give DH or I gifts. But they do send checks for our kids' college funds. That the best gift we could get anyway.

My MIL barely buys me a gift. This year, she got something totally weird for both me and DH (for our house). It was lame, and we spent a lot on (nice!) presents for them.

However! My in-laws are local, and they have a great relationship with my kids. They are crappy gift givers, but they babysit for free about one night a month. I will take that over a present any day of the week.

Leave the kids out of it, they can keep their grandma as long as the relationship there works out. But no way is this kind of behavior acceptable for Christmas (or Birthdays for that matter). Either she may not participate in Christmas gift giving, if she can't embrace the spirit and make it work. Or she gets her shit together and behaves like an adult.

All of this over a damn gift???? I could care less if my own mother got me a gift. Some of the responses really illustrate that there's probably a petty DIL for every shitty MIL out there. I feel sorry for the grandkids of the mom who insinuated that access to her kids is based on her personal relationship to her MIL.

Exactly.

My MIL got me shitty gifts.
A gold purse, a itchy yellow sweater w beads on it, some leopard print tote bag. I think she hit the TJ Maxx clearance section. She stopped with the gifts when we moved away. I don't miss them nor have I ever expected gifts from her.

+1, and she likes me but man, she gets close and then goes high and right

She doesn't like you. Live with it.

I wish my MIL wouldn't give me anything. It's never anything I want or need and I feel bad giving/throwing it away shortly thereafter.
