Me again. Do you think the second season will keep the first section of the book, in which Claire is now in the 1960s trying to figure out what happened to the Fraser clan at Culloden? It seems to me that it really adds nothing to the story told in the second book. Assuming there is a third season, I think that part would make more sense at the start of the third season, helping to frame the story of what happened after Claire went back through the stones and her yearning to know what happened to the people she left behind in Scotland. Plus, why bother going to the trouble of casting a Briana and an adult Roger if there's a chance there won't be a third season? (They likely won't know until mid-way through the second season if there will be a third.)

Regarding DG and her kinks: I TOTALLY agree. I think a lot of the violence in the book makes sense within the context of the time, but I also think DG *likes* it and finds it a turn-out. Thus, she wants this hot, heavy relationship between Claire and the gorgeous Scot, but then she wants a reason for him to have to spank her (because DG is into that), so she engineers Claire's escape, without having properly demonstrated Claire's great desire to get back to Frank (because DG is so into Jamie herself). I think DG has woven a great yarn, and created some great characters, but I think she gets caught up in her own little fantasies at times. The show is approaching this from a much more objective viewpoint, and creating a better story because of it, IMO.

Ah - I'm the pp who thought Culloden was in book 1 (and mentioned Diana's kinks) - I totally forgot it was in book 2. Am very relieved to be reminded.

You summarized my thoughts very well. The books are so overwritten and I think the show is doing a great job of restraining the narrative.

I listened to the interview where Diana said she thought Sam was "grotesque" based on his IMDB photos. She obviously doesn't think that anymore and he took her comment in stride. She is just a bit awkward - obviously very cerebral, but maybe lacking some social skills.

I listened to a second interview where the interviewer commented on how much sex was in the books. I actually liked Diana's comment - to paraphrase she essentially said that the series isn't a romance, it's the portrait of a marriage over decades and that Jamie/Claire are passionate people with a passionate sex life. She was quite matter of fact about it and didn't come off as creepy.

My guess at the episodes in the Season 1, Part 2:

(will there be 8 more?)

1. Jamie rescues Claire from Randall's clutches. The Beating Scene. Scot party returns to Leoch. Jamie and Claire fight about their claims on one another, have hot make-up session.

2. Claire learns that Geillis is pregnant by Dougal. Jamie and Claire grow closer. Somewhere in here we learn that Randall has previously propositioned Jamie. Claire and Geillis are arrested and tried as witches.

3. Jamie rescues Claire from trial. Claire tells him she is time traveler. Jamie takes her to the stones. Claire decides to stay with Jamie. Travel to Lallybroch.

4. Life at Lallybroch with Jenny & Ian. Scene where Jamie confesses how much he wanted to marry her. Jenny has baby.

5. Jamie & Ian ambushed and Jamie taken prisoner. Claire searches for him. Scene with Dougal wanting her to marry him. Claire organizes rescue of Jamie.

6. Claire et al. break into prison. Failure to rescue Jamie. Randall takes Claire, then exchanges her for Jamie.

7. Jamie rescued from prison. Claire tries to treat him at MacRannoch's cottage. Escape to France.

8. At the Abbey. Bringing Jamie back to life, and back to Claire. Warm bath. Claire is pregnant.

I thought the rent episode was terrific, actually, and conveyed a lot of important context. The Highland way of life, the attitude toward women, the brewing rebellion, the distrust of/animosity towards the English. It also demonstrated the complex and fraught relationship between Jamie and Dougal/the MacKenzies and showed Jamie as somewhat apart from the others in his openness towards Claire and his general sympathy for her.

At this point, we are just about half way through the book, as well as half way through the season. I think they will end up cutting things from the second half of the book, but I doubt they will have to do any real damage to fit it all in the allotted time.

Ok so I am not into the second book and find myself skimming most of it. Holy Cow, where is a good editor when you need it. I feel like its imposible to keep up with all the names, royaloty, alliances etc. The france stuff is boring. Will it pick up once they get back to scotland? Need more sexy time, kilts, clan drama and a lot less talk about kings etc...snooze. This book should have been edited to 400 pages. Is Diana Gabaldon a one trick pony? cause right now, she isnt even using that trick very well. I probably will stop after the second book and just rewatch the first season.
