My DH and I will disagree strenuously. We don't raise voices. We don't call each other names. We don't swear at each other. And we don't say intentionally mean things.

I personally would never be with someone who does any of the above. And when you date for several years before marriage (pretty much the norm these days), it's not like any of the above behavior should be a surprise.

Probably "fuck off" mid-argument (which I've said, too).

It is terrible in its own way, but I can't remember either of us saying something specifically hurtful or insulting like the examples in this thread.

saying mean things with the intention to hurt someone else is abusive... so no- not everyone does it. Now have I said things I regret or think were unfair, sure. But MEAN with the sole intent to hurt? nope

I've never said anything mean or name called during arguments with my husband and neither has he. I dated a man who was emotionally abusive and even then I didn't sink to his level. I would not tolerate today.

I've never insulted or used bad names during an argument. The only person I've ever really argued with is my DH, and he is incredibly cruel and says horrible things to me and calls me names. I hate it, my family never talked to each other like that. I have "non-confrontational personality" according the the therapist I've seen. When my husband yells at me and calls me names, I just clam up and don't engage. Every time it happens, I think to myself, I'm going to stand up for myself next time, but then when it happens, I just can't do it.
