Subject: My son wants to apply to Stanford only. I want to encourage him, but do not think it is realistic.
Anyone applying to one school is being foolish. There is no sure thing even if he was perfect. You are the parent, you are footing the bills I presume for the app fees, I would tell him minimum 5-6 schools and applying ED to Stanford.

The only student I know currently at Stanford is a triple legacy (and not happy).

True^^ but some schools (Princeton, I think?) don't take transfers. I don't know about Stanford.

Transferring in after a year at another school is a viable option.
