It's different because you have a ton of people walking between you and your car, obscuring your vision, and having access to your car.

I might leave my baby in the car in the driveway (if I had one), but I wouldn't leave my baby in the car parked on the street while there was a steady flow of traffic on the sidewalk between me and my car.

You are just trading one risk for another. You could get held up at the ATM, in which case your baby would have been much better off in the car. Both are as likely happen, which is to say very rare.

Additionally, most people drive their kids places that aren't necessary. I could do PeaPod, but we go to Whole Foods sometimes. We could play in the hard, but we drive to the park sometimes. We could never live this area, but we fly on a plane to a vacation destination. The idea that you can eliminate risk is ridiculous and people hyper-focus on stupid stuff that has an incredibly low likelihood of harming

I personally would not want to roll the dice in that type of situation, but to each their own.

Ugh. Talk about borrowing trouble.

Shit can happen. That doesn't mean it's likely to happen. And you don't know whether it will be locking your keys and your baby in the car (which could happen whether you're planning to take the baby with you to the ATM or not), or getting violently mugged while you hold your baby at the ATM. If we all refused to put ourselves or children in any situation, ever, that carries risk, well....wait. There is no situation that carries no risk. Natural gas explosions, electrical fires, choking, falling down the stairs, car crashes, tree falling on us, car jumping the curb, muggings, slipping on ice, exposure to disease, dog attack, poisonous spider bite, terrorist attack. There is no safe place or activity. You can choose to live a life circumscribed by fear of remote possibilities, but there are a LOT of remote possibilities.

It is a hell of a lot more dangerous to drive to the ATM than it would be to step a few feet away while your baby is buckled in the car on a cool day. People are letting their imaginations go haywire.
