No, I'm sorry, there is no data, census or otherwise, that shows this. You might be able to find some data regarding the city of D.C., but that doesn't show the gender balance over the entire DMV. And it doesn't break down by age (i.e. eliminating the fact that women live longer than men, so in the 70+ age range there generally are more women than men). And while some data will show married vs. unmarried, there's certainly no data indicating how many of the unmarrieds are truly single (meaning not living with a partner or in a LTR).
I don't think she means an actual gender imbalance, but rather someone with an equal or higher SES. And to that extent, she's right. If you are an AA woman in her 20s-40s in this town, you have an advanced degree and want to date with the goal of a LTR or marriage, you are competing with a lot of peers for a small pool of men who are similar to you. The men know this and many have exploited female anxiety over this by conducting multiple relationships at the same time. This is one reason why increasing numbers of AA women are open to dating non-AA men (swirling).

P.S. If you are AA, female, and single, don't keep wasting your time in the DMV civilian fed employee, Big Law, Fortune 500 dating pool. Date active duty military. Insist on real dates, none of this "talking", "hanging", or whatever slang the guy wants to use instead of dating. Be clear that you want a LTR or marriage. Establish that you are not giving up the cookie for a minimum of 3 months of exclusive dating. Insist on meeting friends and family relatively early on.

Actually, I am a happily divorced woman in my 40s in a LTR with a great hard-bodied civil servant in his 40s. I don't want your paunchy guy. Nobody but you does.

I'm in my 30s. I'm in a relationship, but wasn't for several years. Married men hit on me. They still do if I'm out by myself. I flirt with them, but don't hit on them.
I like guys in their mid to late 40s. Some of them are quite sexy! They can also hold their own in conversation and have some skills in bed. I don't understand why the PPs are talking about older guys like that. Different strokes , I suppose.

True, but in DC the young, available, professional women far outnumber the young, available, professional men. That difference has to be made up somehow.
The vast majority of the young, available professional women are all competitively and non-exclusively dating the same young available, professional men rather than chasing middle aged, balding, soft-bellied DCUM husbands. Quite a few are (gasp) dating other young, available professional women.

People make all kinds of choices based on the situation they are in and their level of emotional maturity. Sometimes stress causes them to behave irrationally. Bottom line " when you know better, you do better"
