Hanna's are hardly "status" They are good quality clothing, but kind of expensive. So I don't think buying something for the same price as you would pay for an inferior product is hypocritical. For the record, Target ain't that cheap! I have somethings found things for good prices, but other times found it to be just a couple of dollars cheaper and has less soft fabrics and the seams are itchy. (some kids are sensitive to those things.)

I don't think Hanna's are status at all, but the pp seems to, or she wouldn't feel the need to justify.

I think it is crazy to spend a lot of money, but I would rather buy decent quality and fewer pairs. I would NEVER buy designer shoes, but something like birkenstocks in the summer, for example, so their feet are comfortable and supported are not cheap. I think it is important to have good shoes. Likewise I think good quality, well made (no labels) clothing is also important. I feel like kids will be miserable and fidgety in class if they are wearing itchy polyester clothes. I am willing to pay a bit more for my kids comfort, but do not do so to impress anyone.....
