Yes, that's true. And I guess it's where we'll end up. I'm not thrilled about the school, particularly the unenthusiastic teachers, but also Tools of the Mind. My kid does pretty well at "self regulation" and is already way ahead of what they will be teaching academically. I don't know a single family in the neighborhood sending their kid their for K.
You'll meet them, because you weren't the only parent in the entire neighborhood that was shut out.
Actually, of the many families I know in the neighborhood, I was. Everyone else already had decent kindergarten options having got lucky in previous years lotteries. Yes, there are kids at that school, but they are not active in the community and they are not families that I know. We have a neighborhood listserv with hundreds of parents on it. Literally NOBODY on that list serv sends their kids there for kindergarten. A few go there for PS3 and PK4 but by K they find somewhere else to go.
Time to meet the families with kids your kid's age! This year, there will be people on your listserv sending kids to K, because they will have been shut out too. Unless you're the only one in the entire neighborhood who has a kindergartner this year? Did you post on your list serve yet?

Time to roll up your sleeves and recruit. That is the said reality of DCPS in this era of choice. If you want to build a community you have to do it yourself.

This process is very disappointing. We are waitlisted in the 100s and 200s in most lottery picks. We have lower waitlist numbers for 2 schools.

No. Not an option. Like I said we have no other option.
You have pther options, they just might not be a choice that you are willing to make. You could send you child to the IB school. Move. Homeschool. Private. Don't feel defeated.
Move, homeschool, private are NOT options. Not everyone on this board is wealthy. Our only real "option" is the IB school which is not really an "option" simply the default.
Welcome to the reality of the rest of us who aren't wealthy and whose inbound school is the only option. Maybe you will now help us improve our inbound school. After all, you chose our neighborhood to live in.

yes, because people will hold spots at non-common schools and common schools which will foul up the movement.
there simply aren't that many spots at non-common schools that won't be taken by their lottery winners.

I don't know if your chances of getting into FS will be any better in round 2. I put it down in round 1 and got a waitlist number in the 60s. So if you apply in round 2 you will be behind that.
Can you even apply to the same school in round 2? From my understanding, your WL will be behind the ones waitlisted on the first round.
You can only apply to schools you didn't apply to in round 2. Your WL number will be behind the others who were wait listed in the first round.

How do you know this?
Every new school in recent years (even IT, MV, and CM) went well past 20s in their first year. Especially with temporary location. Many chose Lee as a back up and will likely get in elsewhere. We were in 20s the 1st year of IT and got in around May.
But they were all before the common lottery. With the common lottery people don't have back-ups. they get in to one school only.
