For Mexican (vs TM) try the "gas station taco bar" in Gaithersburg, near Sam Eig and Washingtonian Blvd. Take-out mostly, but a few tables.

Yes, I was so looking forward to it and what a disappointment! Bland and boring. And up the street, Rosa Mexicano is way overpriced for not very good food. Oh, and drinks where the alcohol seems to be dispensed with an eyedropper.

Rosa Mexicano is to Tex-Mex (or Mexican) what PF Chang's is to Chinese cuisine. A pretty, but bland, pseudo-upscale mall eating experience -- even when the restaurant isn't in a shopping mall.

- Can't wait to try local Chuy's this weekend. Creamy jalapeño sauce. YUM.

- I really liked the crab and blue corn nachos at Cyclone Anaya's. Don't give up on them yet.

- Rio Grande always gets Tex-Mex right. Very reliable.

- Went to Guapo's last week after a long hiatus and the enchiladas and quesadillas were quite good. My Texan DH commented that the refried beans were 'right.'

- Fuego's margaritas are superb - their food is good, but not Tex-Mex.

District Taco is so far away from TexMex. So terrible. And Taqueria Poblano? please. Do not waste your time or money.

I love Chuy's, too! I go to one in ATL when visiting family. I am jealous NOVA has one. I hope they open one closer to suburban MD. Fairfax isn't worth the drive to me.

I posted about chuys opening! I am right there with you,PP! I've been twice in a week! DH is from austin and we visit frequently!! I love that place!!!

This in no way responsive to the original request for Tex Mex near a metro in DC, but for anyone who might instead be hoping to have very good tacos after a soccer game out at Muldoon's Farm, check out this place: http://www.yelp.com/biz/mexican-grill-poolesville-2 It's a funny little strip mall store (not open on Sundays) that we stumbled upon a few years ago when the post-game line at Subway (same plaza) was too long. The service is usally slow and indifferent, but the tacos are delicious.

Why the Austin Grill hate?

Really surprised by the negative reviews of Mi Cocina on this thread. Awesome margaritas, great food. You can sit outside and let your kids run around in the plaza area by the fountain.

There's a Cyclone Anaya's in Fairfax (only location outside of Texas). While it's not my favorite Tex Mex back home (native Houstonian here), it beats most other sorry excuses for Tex Mex options around here.

Just went there...I thought it was very good. I also like Taqueria Poblano, but some of you might consider that more Cali-Mex.

I think it may be more Mex than Tex-Mex, but Casa Oaxaca is delicious. I discovered with a Groupon a few years ago and fell in love.
