regarding race and crime, it's probably a lot more complicated than the discussion on this thread would imply. here's the beginnings of a reading list:

As for Mundo Verde's new location, seems like a good choice given the likely options. It's a very well-regarded school and people will continue to commute to it, including Mt Pleasant and Columbia Heights parents. We'll know more after March 31st...

We're a Mt Pleasant family aiming to lottery into MV. The new location is transitioning, and the new grounds are going to be much nicer than the Mt Pleasant one. It's a bit of a drive, but the quality of the school makes it worth it, in our opinion. We're not worried about crime during school hours.

yes, this is an urban environnment. Does that excuse rampant gun crime? Do people in San Francisco and Manhattan tolerate it? DC is not a normal urban environment. It was recently the murder capital of the US, and has a much higher % of AA and a much higher % of poor families than the national average.

Every 1-2 weeks there is a fatal shooting near the new MV location. And every time the Truxton boosters go on PoPville to say it is perfectly safe, don't be a sissy. Thankfully we have posters like the PP who do NOT tolerate the crime.

If you bought in Truxton 4 years ago then you are making good money on that - congrats. But don't try to argue that it's "just as safe as the rest of DC". It's still very dangerous.

Now that MV has moved I predict over time you will see more Bloomingdale families and fewer Mt P. DC hasn't been the murder capital since the 90s, during the crack epidemic. it had fewer than 100 homicides last year, putting it well off the list of most dangerous cities.
there isn't a fatal shooting in truxton circle every week or two. i checked ALL of ward 5 (truxton circle is a tiny portion of ward 5), and you know what? there were THIRTEEN homicides in ALL OF WARD 5 in 2013. and a quick look of where they happened shows many of them didn't occur anywhere near the new school location
and it would be great if you can explain why DC isn't a 'normal urban' environment because it has more AA people? i'm guessing you're linking a higher percentage of AA people with more violent crime. which makes you a racist.

Wait...when was the last time DC was the murder capital of the the US? And what does having a high black population have to do with murders?

I agree with you that MV had few options and their choice isn't a bad one. Plus, Truxton/NoMa are changing for the better.

However your statement in bold is completely false, if you are talking about serious crime. There was a fatal drive-by shooting in Co Heights a few year's back (2010?) and it made the FRONT PAGE of the Post because it was considered so shocking that such a crime could still occur in CoHi. Whereas drive-bys still happen on a monthly basis in Truxton, and it never makes the news unless a dozen people get shot (as happened a year or so ago). Give me a break.

If you are talking about petty crime, purse snatching, yes, this is more likely in absolute numbers in CoHi, because CoHi is the most densely populated neighborhood in the city and has the most foot traffic. But it is much safer on a per capita basis than Truxton.

Agree. Current MV families who live in MtP are likely to stay. But fewer MtP families are likely to accept MV than before based on location.

the school can make sure there is jncreased security and police presence and can also make sure that th e building and playground are secure. it can also make sure it does outreach activities in the community.

Gonzaga High School is a few blocks away and the new buildings for NPR and Walmart are nearby. Lots and lots of change going on. Nope not yet and Walmart is on the next block. They are putting up new luxury condos right next to Sursum Corda on the south side.

The housing project/apt building on NY Ave and N Cap that had the shooting two yrs ago is now directly across N Cap from a new high rise luxury condo building being built.

DC is probably waiting to see if they can buy the residents out and sell the land to a developer for more luxury condos.

Other than the shooting on NY Ave and NCap that happened two yrs ago, FYI, SOME is on the same block as MV and they bus in homeless people EVERY morning so they can eat. If you have a problem with that MV may not be the school for you.
