I think you have it backwards. The lawyers can get several multiples of their government pay in private practice, meaning they take a pay cut to work for the government. The HR and Admin people in government often make several times what they would get in the private sector --that's where the salaries should be cut.

Accountant at federal agency. Make over 100k, telework 2x a week, flexible schedule, friendly coworkers, challenging work. There are a lot of long hours, but have the flexibility to put in additional time from home on evenings and weekends.

At my agency there is no such thing as a "general attorney" and anyone who is a star would be getting far more in "bonus" as % of pay, reflective of performance. No other profession in the agency I quote from gets these kind of bonuses. ONly the attorneys. Many people don't get ANY Bonus whatsover there. Let alone a $10,000 one. Nada nothing. And it isn't because they are poor performers. This bonus came on top of a 5% salary increase. Give me a break. This is because attorneys feel they can push people around with those stupid 3 years of law school they do..joke. Have no respect for them.

you also realize that $9.5K is only slightly over 4% of their base. that is not a very large bonus by just about anybody's standards.

what is your basis for suggesting nobody deserves that pay? the government is not immune to the market - they have to pay in order to get top talent.

Also, many of the attorneys in those agencies who are receiving those huge bonuses and sky high salaries (in comparison to other multi-degreed professionals there) could never hack it in a private law firm. But, they pull down those bonuses there. It isn't like the private law firms are clamoring for the ones I have in mind.

that's too funny b/c you do realize that most bonuses at law firms are in 10K multiples, right? For example, my first year bonus in 2000 was $15K.

If you really want to be pissed, consider investment bankers who are largely responsible for the previous financial crisis. My SIL got a 100K bonus her first year at a highly prestigious investment bank, but I seriously doubt anyone is worth that kind of money.

Budget Analyst for the DOD. The job is interesting and you're directly involved in the defense budget process. The pay is good and we have high GS levels in the career field.
Cons: The bottom ranks of the DOD are filled with window lickers who are protected from the real world and not interested in promoting. Most didn't go to a real college and are the online school type. The majority wouldn't be allowed to sniff the door knobs of private sector companies. So, you have to trod your way through the lower ranks and deal with the incompetent and lazy. Otherwise, it's great.
