I highly doubt many hispanics at the FCPS are immigrants, let alone illegal. 95% were probably born here. Their parents, on the other hand, are a different story. So assuming these children are US citizens, damn right they are entitled to a public school education regardless of their parents' choices.

If they are here illegally should they stay because we need them somehow? Should they be given more resources than the children who have been living here paying taxes for a long time? Are their parents even paying any taxes to fund the schools? That is what is happening. Those 100 ESOL teachers could be 100 more teachers in other classrooms helping those students learn more instead of having overcrowded classrooms and trailers all over the place.

Not 10:50, but I actually agree with you. This is an nationwide problem, however, not a FCPS problem. Our immigration system is broken and I am not quite sure how it can be fixed. I do think FCPS is very generous with its immigrant population which is both a blessing and a curse. It is great that these kids can come here and try to get an education and eventually graduate from high school and become productive members of society. But like I said before, many of them come with so many issues that they will never graduate by the time they are 22. That's why I think we need some sort of different program which will give them vocational skills so that they can get jobs eventually and pay taxes.

My bad, I guess there are 100 students instead of teachers. But either way, I don't understand the need to have them here in this County. There's a difference between educating people who speak a different language when they come to some degree verses advertising that "our county is the best at educating foreigners, so please everyone come to our county and we'll educate you even better than we educate our own citizens."

And our country NEEDS these young people to become productive citizens... so it is worth it to teach them. When they become productive, tax-paying workers, they will contribute to the tax base just as your English-speaking children will. It's a win-win to teach them and bring them into our society.

Do you seriously think the only kids we get in ESOL come as young children? I am a high school ESOL teacher and we have gotten two new students this week - both teenagers from El Salvador. If anything, these kids have a bigger challenge because they are older and they are generally less educated kids who come at a young age. Yes, a child who comes at age 5 may only take 1-2 years to learn English, but a teenager who comes at age 17 with a 3rd grade education will probably take 5-6 years at least to become proficient. At Falls Church HS alone, I believe they have over 100 ESOL 1 students (there are 4 levels of ESOL in FCPS).

Replace the words illegal alien with pedophile, and people would upset and want them out of the schools. Both are criminals.

Just when you think you've seen everything on this board.........that's just sick.

I feel sorry for you if that is how you think. Would "speeders" be an equally valid substitution? They are breaking the law as well. How about "people who pay their taxes late"? Should we kick them out of school too? How about "people who park in no-parking zones or near curbs"?

There are plenty of staff who are available to help parents understand this. We have a bilingual parent liaison and office staff members. Families are often connected to other family members and/or have connections through church to learn about registering their child for school. Finally, almost all the parents have jobs and are motivated to get their kids into school if for no other reason than for childcare during the day. They are working and trying to survive.

In my opinion, the requirement for the birth certificate or affidavit does not discourage registration. And the portrayal here and on other threads that there are thousands of illegal immigrants flooding our schools is absurd. Being an ESOL student doesn't automatically mean your parents are illegal immigrants. Almost all our families have been in the country for years and are properly documented. Many are second generation. They are hardworking and want the best for their children. They are respectful to teachers and want to participate in their children's education.

I am calling out your bull shit. How come you don't mention the fact that the Hispanic population which equals esol and farm rates in each school , has ballooned the last 15 years. You can possibly believe that high esol and farms don't use cc up resources and drag down school.

We need to get coffee. Excellent post.

You are happy to pay these low prices that exist because there are people who will accept low wages. Then when the houses are all built, they suddenly are seen as a liability. You all go to church, but you don't have an ounce of Christian charity.

The fact that our house was (a) not cheap and (b) had severe enough electrical issues three times to cause sparks and smoke tells me that I am NOT grateful for those builders hire under the table. My husband was able to re-wire and fix all the problems, which were very simple fixes but VERY hazardous. He's always on the look-out for symptoms of other issues.

These people broke the law. Charity has nothing to do with it.

Insanity.

We are one of the four largest sanctuary 'cities' in the country. The article writers are not blind; they know it's the elephant in the room. They know they will be beaten down for even suggesting it.
