Guys, it's a new year. Anyone test all the canned pumpkin to see if it's still gritty?

Because people have food allergies and can’t trust factory foods. Because people have their preferred recipes. Because people use canned pumpkin for other uses, like smoothies (yes grit in mine from Libby’s, 2018) and pancakes and muffins and cake and bread. ?

There are two things -- canned pumpkin and canned pumpkin pie filling. I imagine most people that make a pumpkin pie are using canned pumpkin to start, rather than cooking down a raw pumpkin.

Very old thread people. This one keeps popping up.

According to Epicurus, Libby’s produced 85% of the world’s canned pumpkin, so even if you are buying a different brand, it most likely is private labeled from Libby’s, so will be the same.

If you're using canned pumpkin, why not just buy a prepared pie?

Just opened a can of libby pumpkin I got for my dogs upset stomach. I ate a spoonful and immediately got a napkin to deposit it. Then still had glass like crunching between my teeth so rinsed really well with plenty of water. Not good.

Wow, I'm soooo glad I found this site. I have gritty pumpkin bread in front of me (March 2018!!!) - and this isn't the first time!! It has happened quite a few times and I almost always use Libby. How embarrassing, thank God I'm not bringing this anywhere. I will swithch to an organic brand and keep my fingers crossed theirs is better prepared. This is just awful - sandy crunch in my teeth.

My Libby's pies at Thanksgiving were not gritty at all.

Every can of Libby's pumpkin I have ever used has grit in it. I, like another commenter thought it was my organic sugar. I knew for sure that it was the pumpkin when I had a bit left over from what my recipe called for in my pumpkin yeast bread. I ate it and there was a LOT of grit in it. I am very particular about people tasting my baked goods and I was embarrassed when I took my pumpkin bread to work and everyone was eating grit! Glad I know now that it wasn't the sugar.

I have always used Libby's because it is what my grocery store carries year round. I think I will stock up on one of the organic types that always show up around this time of year. I have a 17 month old that loves pumpkin pancakes.

How do you make pumpkin pancakes?

2017 and it's still gritty

Found this thread because I've always had this problem and have just assumed it was spices. Until this last time with Whole Foods organic pumpkin purée. I almost broke a tooth eating some homemade pumpkin cheesecake and my mom asked about it too. Very gritty. This confirms that it's the pumpkin, but in my experience, it doesn't matter the brand. Organic, conventional, Libby, TJ's, WF, Costco bulk canned pumpkin or others. I've always had this problem. Glad to hear it's sand and not shards or metal or something. But still so very gross and frustrating!!!

[guardian]I just bought organic pumpkin from Farm Fresh, their brand, & it was very gritty, so much so that I worried it might be glass. I try to always buy FarmersMarket brand organic pumpkin and NEVER have had a problem w/grit & it tastes a lot better. It is a bit pricey & hard to find though. I too put a 1/2 teaspoon in my dog's food (depending on their weight) & always have one for myself. Just be sure when using for dogs the only ingredient is pure pumpkin & not one with all the spices ready for a pie filling.
