He happily goes and we have a good time bc I do what I want to do and don't rely on him to read my mind and make it happen. DH is great in many other areas. He gives me breaks and downtime, grocery shops, does the dishes and laundry and more without me asking. He is great with our dc and spends alot of quality time with him. If I had to choose between creative bd ideas and a DH who is great day to day and who is willing to celebrate, I will take what I get.

Does he buy you a gift/card?

I think there is a reasonable level of compromise. My husband doesn't celebrate birthdays at all. I like big birthday celebrations. Our agreement is that we each get each other a cake and a small gift. That way everyone gets some of what they want.

OP, a lot of men just don't understand why women make such a big deal out of their birthdays. Stop depending on someone else to make it enjoyable for you, and arrange to go out, alone or with friends, for something you enjoy -- shopping, a movie, whatever. Make your own happiness! And if DH s not good at shopping for you, buy yourself something nice! It doesn't have to be expensive, but get yourself something that will make you smile. Otherwise, you are just setting yourself up for years of disappointment.

And that someone's feelings may be hurt if their spouse doesn't do something special on their birthday. Who called OP a 13 year old for this? Wow, wouldn't want to live in your household. Sounds really warm.

+1 Because they are miserable and expect little, that's how they think everyone else should be too.
