You always here this very odd bromide that suggests Europeans are more sophisticated when it comes to alcohol. They are not. They have higher rates of alcohol abuse (Russia, anyone?) and a more cavalier about it overall. The UK is filled with stories about bad public behavior by public drunks.
The other favorite bromide I have is this stupidity: "Well, if you can serve in the military at 18, you should be able to drink." First of all, that's an idiot fucking analogy. It makes it sound like drinking is a privilege, when in fact it's a scourge to be reluctantly tolerated. Also, the people who say this almost NEVER have their children in the military. So, I always respond, "fine. When Larla enlists, I won't raise any objection to her drinking herself into oblivion."
Moderate drinkers have lower mortality rates than abstainers. It is one of life's pleasures, and you sound like you could use some joy in your life. Perhaps pour yourself a glass of wine tonight?
