DC area is no gay mecca in the suburbs.

There are a lot of gay families/couples here, and it is probably more diverse than any of the other places you're considering. It is also more walkable than any of the places mentioned. At 17th and K, you could walk to work from CH. Go to bloombars and check out what CH is like.

Arlington means no gay marriage -- plus there'll still be older folks who'll give them dirty looks.

For $900k, you can get something close to downtown Silver Spring. Maybe Shepherd Park, although Shepherd ES gets looked down on for some reason, despite having less poverty/at-risk kids than many raved-about schools on the Hill.

OTOH, the diversity there might not be what you'd like -- older Blacks and a sizeable more conservative Jewish community.

Huh? Arlington is gay Mecca. There are tons of lesbian parents and gay parents at my kids' school. We are in Clarendon area.

Celebrate your gayness! is not going to happen in ANY of these neighborhoods.

Oh, that is funny.

Another vote against Bethesda. While there are many liberal individuals in the area, there is also a fairly large contingent of conservatives in the area that will be hostile whether openly or covertly. There is a large conservative Jewish community in Bethesda and CC and also a fairly active conservative Christian population. While there will be many people open to your situation, there will also be a significant number of people who really would wish that you kept your relationship and family in the closet and some will be vocal about it. It's just a really mixed reception there and you won't know which subgroup you'll be interacting more with until it is too late.

I would love to know where these politically conservative Jews are. What on earth are you talking about? Are you pulling this info. Out of the air? What are you even basing this upon?

She's confusing the Conservative Jewish movement with political conservatism. Conservative rabbis perform gay marriages.

Bethesda is a liberal community in one of the most progressive states in the country. I wouldn't choose to live in Bethesda myself, but nothing about the PP's post is grounded in reality.

Not really no. I am not Jewish, but I am at an event held in a synagogue in Chevy Chase weekly and I've heard a lot of anti-gay sentiment there over the course of the last few years. Enough to be uncomfortable to a gay family moving into the area.

OP-
There are no gays in bethesda. I also find it extremely "white." Unfortunately Moco is a little awful when compared to really progressive areas. I'd stick to DC.

OP-- I would take a lot of the suggestions on this board with a grain of salt. There are some very untrue things that have been said about neighborhoods folks have suggested to you as we'll as accurate things.

I think Silver Spring and Takoma Park are good choices, but I'd definitely add Colonial Village or Shepherd Park DC to the list. Nice homes and diverse, welcoming community.

Capitol Hill for sure.
