All you SEC folks care about are rankings, football rankings school rankings whatever makes you sleep at night. Vanderbilt is the only good school in the SEC. All the others drool over kids from this area and reward them handsomely.

Is a four year degree really that out of reach? Depending on my aid eligibility, within in Virgina, I can do a B.A. from the University of Virginia for between 22,000 and 68,000. This assumes two years at a CCVS school in the UVA guaranteed admissions program.

I personally think any child can have the experience they want at just about any school. Many people on this board would scoff and dismiss my Big Midwestern U education (which I took b/c I was footing the bill and knew I'd also be footing grad school). I've done well above average.

I have friends with kids at Old Miss who are thriving there and love it. That said, the one thing that I think I would struggle with (and this is true for any of the deep south schools) is the southern "culture" that is prevalent on those campuses. Not saying I would dissuade my DD. And, maybe it's not as I'm envisioning it. I'm just wondering if that would be a good fit.

Anxiety on not getting into a top tier and fear of missing out run deep on DCUM, and probably through the entire DC metro region.

Wow, what a bunch of self-righteous elitist snobs there are on here!! It's actually kind of scary, making it sound like any student who does not get into an Ivy or other top tier school is worthless and might as well hang it up. My DS applied and got in. He is an OK student; it is not particularly hard to get into. He has a B average and 1280 SAT if that helps answer your question. He is a great well-rounded kid who is a good athlete with lots of friends. He is a happy kid. We are going to visit Ole Miss and Alabama after the New Year. My take on both those schools is they are decent flagship state universities where you can get a good education, even if they are not Harvard or Yale!

My northern Yankee relatives with degrees from more prestigious schools are a bunch of elitist, racists SOBs. They won’t put their kids in s minority majority school. Bunch of hypocrites.
