I'm puzzled that more people haven't suggested Rockville. There are some very middle-class areas (Manor Woods comes to mind) with good schools. And that's a fairly easy commute to Bethesda.

Haven't read all the replies, but this premise is ridiculous. The "income" of the people in the neighborhood will vary widely depending on when they bought their house, what their family situation is like, whether they own or rent.
For example we live in DC in a house that is now work about $800k. Our HHI is about $90k. We bought our house 10 years ago long before our neighborhood was hip and in demand. If you moved into my neighborhood you'd be the wealthy neighbors to many longer term residents as you'd be the ones paying top dollar for the house.

Bottom line is that moving to South Arlington with public schools in mind is a gamble, like moving to Capitol Hill. They could get better, but they might not. It has little to do with whether someone with an Ivy (or a parent who went to an Ivy?) has a toddler in a South Arlington pre-school right now.

Second this. I'd aim for something that's in the Walter Johnson High School cluster. Less affluent than Bethesda Chevy Chase or Whitman, yet close to your private school and WJ is good in it's own right if you decide to go public. Our HHI is similar to yours and we are pretty much in the middle economically.

Our kids are in an amazing citywide public school. I hope that they will stay in public school through high school, but I realize we may have to look into charters or even private once they are older. But there are certainly strong options here. We have three bedrooms, two baths, and paid well (WELL!) under your range 7 years ago. Our house is probably worth over 600k now but there are certainly even less expensive houses to be had here.
And almost any house on the Hill is within 15 minutes' walk of Metro.
Just a thought, in case you were not considering DC at all.
And Capital Hill to Bethesda is 1.5 hours each way...great place, but probably not for that commute.

Personally, I think Olney might be a good fit (depending on which part of Bethesda- commute time is about 30-45 minutes). Rockville Pike can be a pain though(hit or miss- mostly miss)- so would probably look into ways that minimized the time on the pike. You can find houses for under $600 - but it is a pretty desirable area so they get snatched up pretty quickly......
