I don't think the gym is crowded at all. The outdoor pool, on the weekends, maybe. I go to the gym 5-6 times/week and no - I don't find it "crazy crowded".

Just go ask for the lower rate, what do u have to lose? Tell them your friend got a lower rate, put the burden on the staff.
