It happens at every school. The Whitman principal is just trying to cut down on it. Seems like a better choice than ignoring the issue.

I commend the Principal for sending out the letter, but how big of a problem was it that there was need to send out such a letter? I have never heard of any school having to do this because it was such a regular occurrence, and I moved from a different state.

there is talk right now about rezoning the QO, Gaithersburg, Wootton clusters to alleviate overcrowding in QO and Gaithersburg. So, I would not discount that rezoning could happen in the next few years.

We moved here a few years ago and looked at homes in both the RM and Wootton clusters. The houses we were looking at were all similar in size/lot. The house we ended up buying is in the RM cluster, and it was a bit more than some of the houses we looked at in the Wootton cluster. All were built around the same time.

There is a lower income area that feeds into RM, this is very true. But, a lot of the areas that feeds into RM is pretty expensive: King Farm, Fallsgrove, the area near JW. The SFH houses in those areas typically go for over $800K. Yes, there are expensive parts to Wootton, but I wouldn't say Wootton cluster homes were really that much more expensive. I don't know about how long they sit on the market for.

Went to school in Silver Spring many years ago and there were plenty of drugs and alcohol for those who wanted it. It's total BS that only the "rich" kids have it. I also completely agree with the discussion on housing prices. We live near the edge of the Churchill district and my house re-sales for almost $200,000 more than the exact same cookie cutter house in some Rockville neighborhoods. I agree it's absurd, but its true and its why we bought in Churchill years ago instead of down the road a little ways.

But most homes in Potomac are also closer in to DC than a Rockville house.

As are you if you think the housng markets are remotely similar in Whitman vs Wooton. I bet RM and Wooton are a lot more similar than Whitman and Wooton. I posted earlier - I have never seen Whitman and Wooton considered in the same breath before this thread.

Check out the FARMS, SPED, and ESOL scores. That is most useful to show how well a school does with challenges.

SAT scores pretty much reflect the SES of the kids (not always, but for the most part). High SAT scores in a wealthy school doesn't necessarily mean it's a good school.

When a middle/low income school has good SAT scores, that tells you more. Really, it's about how much the teachers and admin care about the kids, the programs that they offer, the condition of the school, and how little/much social and/or physical bullying there is that makes a school good or bad.

You can have a highly rated school with lots of social bullying, and that would make the school bad.
