I thought it was mildly funny and if I had a kid in the admissions phase of life, I'd probably have sympathized with some of it. However if the post by the PP about her sister is correct, it appears that the author's sister was the same person who led a crusade against the Middle East Studies program at Columbia Univ, on the grounds that there was too much criticism of Israel. Re-reading the WSJ piece with that context, and I see less humor and more intolerance.

She seriously needs a lesson in humility

It sounds like she is going to Univ. of Michigan. I'm an alum and it is full of east coast Ivy League rejects. But they love it there because they are in good company.

She came off really entitled and obnoxious this morning on Today show. Her piece was somewhat funny, but after seeing her attitude in person, I'll bet the colleges are glad they made the decisions they did.

I thought it was funny, in the sense that some teenagers are funny because they make scathing remarks without thinking through the "political" ramifications of their statements.

However, she did make me feel guilty about not pushing my own kids more in hobbies they hate. I was about ready to let my DS stop his instrument lessons but not now!

She was on the Today show this morning. Between that and the letter, my conclusion is that she's not nearly as funny as she thinks she is.

She's clearly bright, and articulate. She's also a kid, and she'll hopefully grow out of the entitlement. Or she'll end up like my father-in-law who blames everything in his life on affirmative action (and told me I got my job because I'm a woman) ignoring the fact that he'd be much further ahead in his life if he had spent a little less of his academic career taking whatever drugs he could get his hands on, and the fact that he was promoted to management and hated it so much that he gave it up for his old job.

Agreed. My son (who did get into the program of his choice) was told that if he did not get in, it would be because of equal opportunity/diversity issues, i.e. they had too many white people already.

No, she kinda was.

She is spot on. I'm a card carrying member of the Crow Nation, my great, great grandmother born in 1880 was full blood married to a white man. My children are "ethnically" registered as Native American. They are run of the mill blonde white kids FULL of New England Irish blood.

It is a game and they will easily get into college and will probably get a scolarship on top of it. Is it fair? NO WAY. The author has a point and is accurate. We're just working the system that is in place, just like everyone else.
