I know old money wasps who went to Choate and Harvard and one whose family owned an island off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, and I can assure you they don't wear LL Bean. That's not preppy.

Most preps don't look preppy in the sense made popular in the 80s. They look fairly shabby, actually, because they tend to buy quality (cars, clothes, furniture) and then keep it forever. Think of the Old School LL Bean look, with natural fibers and trim-fitting polos and chinos that are faded from several summers of sailing.

Meh. It has to do with how you were raised. People are not going to suddenly "see you" as preppy because you wear certain clothes. I know someone (or two) that tried to pull this sh*t, having no pot to p*ss in. They are fooling NO ONE. Frankly, they make a**es out of themselves by being such poor posers. Decide to give it up and grow up, people just aren't that stupid.

But it is about the clothing, and hair, etc. You aren't preppy in jeans and a tee shirt or under armour or sweats or goth. So much of it has to do with the clothing and conservatism. Bleeding heart liberals aren't preppy.

OP. in my neighborhood in CCMD we have several preps, very understated, work in finance, old cars, houses on Nantucket for maybe a hundred years. Protestant. Dress in preppy clothes not always and its often old. Friends with all, gone for stretch? Africa or someplace fabulous but no bragging. Don't belong to country clubs. One went to Deerfield but kids go public.

Everyone had their image of a prep. This is mine.

Anyone can ape the prep style of dress. Prep is so much more than the clothes. I think you may not know what upper class preppy is. Real preps don't think that much about the style. It's just ingrained. Difficult to explain.
