DS wears shorts, t-shirt, pullover/hoodie, socks and sneakers almost every day. The classrooms can be stifling and I drop him off and pick him up from the bus (bus is not walking distance from our house). At recess he plays basketball or football everyday. He's comfortable and honestly it's not a battle I care to fight because I believe in natural consequences. He has chosen to wear pants on some days and if I know that it will be particularly cold or windy I warn him. He's 10.

Really, kids can make their own decisions. My son does not do it because it's "cool". He's oblivious to others' opinions about clothing.

Mine does it all the time and he's in second grade. He never seems to feel cold. I did read an article a while back mentioning how some peoples cold receptors are different. So certain people just arn't as sensitive to cold.

We did make a deal that if it's below 40 degrees he has to wear long pants. I remember when he was 2 or 3 and he hated wearing jackets. Just too warm for him as soon as he starts running around at the playground. I do always make him bring a jacket to school which I can only assume he'll wear when they all go out for recess. He doesn't get sick often and seems to survived this Winter thus far.

Happens in ES school, too.

Just before the break, all safety patrols were told that they need to be dressed appropriately for the weather and to provide a good example to other students; this, no more shorts on cold days ( actual temp not given) but it was the idea that if not every kid would be wearing a winter coat, then it's too cold for shorts.

New rule is no patrols in shorts on cold days or you are considered out of uniform. Great. All for this approach.

DD now wearing new jeans daily and got more for Christmas.

You sound like a cranky 80 year old who is remembering the good old days. Kids wearing shorts year-round has absolutely no impact on your life so don't worry your little brain about it a moment longer.

Mah, that's just not true cranky grandma above. Here in Colorado kids wear shorts year round. No one is mocking them because many adults do to.
