my sister's was also in the NY Times -- they didn't know anyone either.
so, my ex-boyfriend's wedding photo was in Town & Country, so i called about getting mine in there too. you basically have to write an essay about your family history, whether your ancestors came over on the Mayflower, where you prepped and whether you summer in Nantucket, Bar Harbor or Newport. needless to say, i did not follow through.

I remember one that mentioned the groom's father was a janitor at an elementary school. Cute couple, and proud of their backgrounds. Loved that one.

Another one I loved was the Larry Summers 2nd marriage announcement a few years ago, where he and the bride were pictured in soft focus. The announcement said the bride's mother was in wedding planning, or something like that. I've seen him many times IRL, and I bet they had to drag him to do that soft-focus shot.

What's with the trend of putting quotes in the announcements? It's like everyone is auditioning for the longer, in-depth feature the NY Times does on maybe one couple every week. Tacky, I say. If you're not selected for the longer piece, just stick to the facts. It's a wedding announcement, not a press release, folks!

That's not true at all about the perk for employees. I am the OP of this thread and I had my wedding announcement in there when I got married almost 4 years ago (after years of faithfully reading them each Sunday, I was ridiculously excited). We knew absolutely no one. I just followed the instructions to the letter and wrote a note on nice stationery with my package, thanking the staffer for their consideration. I would like to think the note helped. We went to good, well known schools, DH works in banking and I worked in education (so cliche I know), and my parents have good jobs but nothing crazy or famous. His mom has never worked and his father has a middle class job.

My bridesmaid, who got married a month before me, did know someone at the paper and submitted her announcement internally. For whatever reason, hers did not get picked.

Maybe, just maybe PP is being sarcastic about the couple being so very obviously Jewish!?!?

Not anymore. The NYT now bends over backwards to be inclusive in the announcements probably to atone for all the years when they weren't. Despite being owned by a Jewish family, the paper used to be quite picky about who it would cover, and this was well into the 80's. I know because good friends of my parents were devastated when their daughter didn't make it in. They have always covered Jews, but the announcements would appear on Monday. I think it was under the premise that Jews married on Sunday rather than Saturday because of Shabbat.

Actually, it's been an "open secret" for years that to get your wedding announcement in the Times, you need to know someone who works there. Doesn't matter "who you are" socially or the status of your friend within the organization. It's just the paper's tradition and a little perc for employees.

Not really. My college roommate's wedding was in the Times and she and her DH didn't/don't know anyone who works there. The Times decides who looks interesting and who/whose parents have noteworthy or interesting jobs.

A number of my liberal friends who say they support gay marriage were actually very upset when the Times started putting in gay commitment ceremonies. They figured it made it even harder to get their wedding announcements into the paper!
