This math doesn't work. On one hand, there are two teachers in each class, so it is much more than that. But there are already second grade teachers and they often move people around so the bleeding edge doesn't usually have all new teacher. You are correct though that there is a lot of hiring going on.

I thought they accepted lottery applications up to 5th grade for SY2014/2015

No. This year they have through second grade. Next year it will be through third. They are not having any fourth or fifth grade next year. Moreover, I don't believe they are adding classes in any of these grades either. The big growth will be in kindergarten and below.

There needs to be an even number of classes in each grade in order to switch between English and Spanish, and two classes per grade would not be financially feasible. But I believe the final number is around 500, not 580.

But the NW schools with populations over 500 are considered overcrowded

They are a relatively small school now and have been in small spaces. This is a lot of change very quickly; will it change the school dynamic?

Yes, much larger than we thought. 4 classes of 22 for K and each year after.

^^that sounds very, very small. are there 30 kids per grade?

600 for an ES might be the outer limit, but i think is pretty common in other school districts and also in parts of NW DC.

That's huge for an elementary school. My daughter goes to a pk3-8th grade school that is 300 total for all grades.
