The feigning ignorance from the other locals does not serve them well.

I can't imagine the nations capitol defending this name. It truly is an embarrassment OP, thank you for your post.

Does that also mean the horrible song will go away too? I don't know of any other major league team in any sport having a "song". Yikes.

My family has been in DC for generations and redskins fans as long as the redskins have been around and I HATE the name. Seriously, the fact that we are debating it at all is indication that it is offensive to at least a good number of people. I'm one of them. The Bullets changed their name and the sky didn't fall in. Its a slur and its offensive.

Eventually they will change the name. It will happen. Its just a question of when.

Maybe because I've never heard anyone EVER refer to American Indians as "redskins". So I guess I've just assumed the meaning in today's vernacular has changed. If someone says "Hey, how about those Redskins", does it ever occur to you they AREN'T talking about football?


Or more appropriately for the last couple of decades, "Wow, the Redskins suck." Does anyone in their right mind think someone who says that is saying something bad about Indians?

Not only that, if you read the article linked above, it's apparent from historical usage that "Redskins" was never a racial slur. The team was named that because of its native American coach, and the word derives from how a number of native American tribes described themselves in their own languages.

They tried the potato thing years ago. But seriously, why would you want a vegetable as the mascot? No wonder it didn't take.

I've got it a possible solution! The Washington Redskins and have our mascot be a red skinned potato! They could serve red skinned mash potatoes and make a "we will smash you" type of message? They could make the transition over 10 years two they could sell inventory and have plenty of time to transfer to the Redskins' new graphic.

gotta love all the dc fairweather fans. i've been to games at fed ex during losing streaks and the stands are empty with folks leaving the games early. now, all of a sudden, there is mania about this team.

i won't refer to the team by their horribly offensive name. isn't it interesting that this very said team was the last to
allow african american players? coincidence? uh, no.

dc should be ashamed for continuing this legacy.

But yeah, I disagree that "bigoted language is bigoted language". I think this is subjective. My best friend is fine with me calling him gay or a fag, because I don't use it in a derogatory manner.
