This is an old thread...VERY OLD. Strangely though I was the OP. Five years later and I'm doing well.

To the new poster above - sending them up for you! I'm sorry you have to go another round with this. Consider giving your body the best chance at fighting with a plant based, dairy free diet. It may not be a cure all, but it will help. Remember, with every bite you are feeding disease or fighting it! (((Hugs)))

Just know that you are not alone. I just got the same diagnosis, and I can't get an appointment for the biopsy until August 30. I have a history of cancer involving 5 lymph nodes (2011). I am a nurse as well so I fully understand the facial gestures and tones. I too am panicked, but I hold steadfast in my faith. He did not bring me this far to leave me. So whatever you believe, rest in that. And it is absolutely ok to have some fear, we are still human. Prayers for you.

OP.. Can you share a bit about your journey this far? I am trying to anticipate what lies ahead for me. I am a few weeks behind you.

I didn't know about the 3D ultrasound, very interesting. There's also 3D mammography. Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TodSnd8kl6Q&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Especially the tip about exercising to combat fatigue. Lumpectomy (if I even have that option) and mastectomy both have pros and cons. I have to be honest though...the mastectomy is likely the path I will choose unless the doctor tells me something truly compelling. Admittedly, neither option is great. I read a really well thought pros/cons list on bc.org regarding DCIS and treatment options. I would post it here, but it is quite lengthy.

My biggest fear is that there is something else lurking in there, hiding in my dense tissue. The mastectomy would reveal everything and sweep most (hopefully all) of it away. However, with three younger kids to care for and a pending divorce I'm not sure how recovery would go. My STBXH won't be much help and I'm certain he will find some way to make my cancer dx be all about him .

I am so happy this thread is helpful to others. Has anyone had the new 3D mammogram? I looked it up on YouTube, no compression AT ALL. It is not widely offered yet, but the technology seems to have finally evolved in our favor!

BC survivor again, and I think you are referring to the 3D ultrasound. I have had it (I also have dense breasts) as part of a study and it is amazing. Yes, no compression and very exacting images in slices. I don't think it is in widespread use yet but it will certainly be a great advance when it is.

I'm so sorry about this news, op. good luck with treatment. So many women who've had breast cancer are successfully treated - you will be too.

BC survivor again -- I am sorry the biopsy was positive but relieved it was DCIS. You will not need chemo. Yes, it is 100% curable because the cancer cells have not invaded tissue and therefore cannot metastasize. Thats why you don't need chemo. Only about 40% of DCIS cases actually progress to invasive cancer but they don't know which 40% so they have to treat every case. Oddly if you have DCIS you are more likely to have a mastectomy than if you have invasive cancer because the area that is involved is more widespread. Though a lumpectomy may still be an option. If you have a mastectomy you will not need radiation. So, really the focus now would be on surgery -- what kind. If lumpectomy is an option, I encourage you to strongly consider it. It really is much easier in the long run and much easier to recover from. radiation is not that bad. They say 50% of women get fatigued with radiation. The best thing to do to avoid that is exercise, even just walking. I'm a runner and had no fatigue with radiation.

The good news now is that you can move from the "what if?" phase and get a plan and put it into action. By summer it will be over.

Im so sorry OP. My Mom finished treatment for her DCIS about 2 years ago. It was a lumpectomy followed by 6 weeks of radiation. She found the radiation tiring but didn't get the "burn" problem. She's now had several follow-up mammograms and has no problems. I am wishing you the same good results.

So sorry OP. But good for you for pursuing the best care.

You had mentioned in your post that your calcifications were 4 c.

Mine are Bi-Rad 3.

It is helpful for me to read about your process and the others who post on here. DCIS is what the doctor says it could end up being, but I won't know for a while.

Thank you for your candor and willingness to share.

Sorry to hear your results OP. I'm one of the breast cancer posters from your previous thread. If you have to go through this, DCIS is the best thing to happen. That is what I originally was diagnosed with, and what informed my treatment plan. Over 3 years later, I'm doing great (and have met many other DCIS patients who are still cancer-free many more years out). If it is only DCIS, they won't prescribe chemotherapy (they sometimes don't even do it for stage 1 patients). It's a shock to hear the doctor say those words, but don't feel like you need to rush into a decision. Give yourself time to make an informed plan with your doctor (it sounds like you are already doing your research). Wishing you best of luck.

Exploding boob lady here: Well, it sounds like the best of the worst OP. Thinking and praying for you. They told me if my calcifications were positive for DCIS, it would be just surgery and a bit of radiation, no chemo - but I know everyone is different. They also said many times it was almost always curable. Take care of yourself and don't be afraid to ask for happy drugs. My dad called them chill pills. They freaking work and will help you be at peace over the holidays.
