This is exactly what happens when Inauguration Day falls on Sunday. A private, low-key swearing in is held at the White House and Monday they do the whole thing over just for show along with parades, balls and all the other stuff. Per the Constitution, a president's term starts at 12 Noon on January 20th, regardless if he takes the oath or not. It will not and cannot be moved or changed.
It is the way it has always been done, and always will be done.

Because its a federal holiday- the federal govt shuts down its hard to be at your desk when your office is closed. BTW, fed are not getting a extra day off bc MLK day and inauguration day falls on the same day.
But that's my point. This is the silly kind of thing that gives Fed employees a bad name in the rest of the country -- extra vacation when everyone else has to work. Unless you work for the agencies impacted that day, it's just bad PR at a time when you don't need anymore of it.
It's not an extra vacation. It's a please stay away from the security and logistical nightmare. Same thing when we have the former president's funerals. We have to many people to gaurd would the GSs please go home

The guy (or possibly gal in the future), is already in office and has already taken the oath, why go through it all again? Seems like a waste of time, money and effort.
I thought they did bag it.
Pretty sure I remember W had a full-blown second inauguration.
You'd celebrate the second time around too if you were accused of stealing the first election.
Wow, now the right is defending the 2000 appointment? Brass balls.
