I too hate having house guests especially family. They do not understand how to be nice house guests. Friends pitch in and make things fun. Family sits around and expects to be catered too. I am too much of a " nice " person to say to them, " I prefer not having house guests, I can make a reservation for you. " We have one family member that goes through our files, our closets and jewelry and tries to find financial documents in our computer! Other family members have told us about this person doing so. She always ask to stay and " read a book " when everyone goes out for an outing. We know what is going on. We hide things before she arrives etc. it is so stressful. She is family and we dont know how to tell her never to return!
NP. That is why I declined the offer from my sister to come from overseas. Since we bought this house she was not allowed to step in.

It's not just you, OP. I am definitely an extrovert. I am fine with close family members spending the night. But I do not want friends in my house over night. We have 4200 square feet. Plenty of room, for sure. I enjoy entertaining. I had a houseful of people over today. Everyone had a great time swimming in the pool and grilling out. But when it's time to go, it's time to go.

You just tell her "you're welcome to come and visit, Aunty Em, but we want you to know ahead of time that we're uncomfortable with anyone staying in the house without us here. So please only come to visit if you want to join all the activities that the rest of us will be doing. Otherwise we completely understand if you'd prefer to stay at home and we'll see you next time at _____."

Single overnight guests (one in-law, a friend of mine or DH) is ok because they can go in the single bed and generally make a small footprint.

I get it, OP.

"Sorry, we decided not to allow overnight guests anymore. The house really isn't set up for it and we find it too stressful. I can give you a list of local hotels though."

I don’t like overnight guest, either. When I’m blowting I need space. If you are blowting, I don’t want to hear your motor running.

I love overnight guests who are good friends for these reasons. Stay up late taking, continue at breakfast which turns into brunch. I'm lucky that family is local so they never stay over, I would have issues with them being in my House for overnight.

Depends who it is. My brother and I have done a lot of catching up while everyone else is asleep. My mom and I enjoy morning coffee together.

I'm actually good with it. In some cases I would rather have the guests than be the guest.

Sorry OP, it's just you. We love having guests, especially old friends we have not seen in a while. It's truly a special time to catch up over wine at 1am while the kids are asleep, no one has to run to a hotel, etc. Makes it so much more meaningful and special. Plus, if people just want to veg out, we can fire up the BBQ and turn on a movie for the night.

I wouldn't want to host overnight guests every weekend. But one weekend per month would be fine, IMHO.
