You are right. The winter there is very rough. However, if you hate D.C. weather like my kid, it's not a problem. When the school year starts up there it's still humid and miserable in D.C. In Maine it's blue sky and low humidity. We all pick our poison I guess.

If it's Davidson, the social climate there is more conservative than Colby or Bates. The son of a friend decided against Davidson because he's Jewish. My kid decided against it because one parent is not American. It's really pretty southern. Any school in the south is going to have a flavor that is unlike independent-minded Maine.

Endowment:
Wesleyan- 688,643,000
Colby - 649,992,000
Bates- 233,803,986
Conn College - 237,035,000
Amherst - 2.15 billion

So Wesleyan and Colby have pretty much the same endowment. Colby and Wesleyan have similar stats on pretty much all measures. Amherst is way more competitive than either school. And Conn College is less competitive. You are really comparing apples to apples in this post.

Bowdoin. Amtrak runs through Brunswick. Quickest drive to Portland is from Bowdoin. It's on the coast so temps can be slightly higher there - but only slightly. Brunswick has its charm while Waterville and Lewiston do not ( and I'm a Colby parent). It is also hardest to get into. Although none of them are an easy admission by any stretch.

Bowdoin is ranked the highest. Colby is ranked 15 and Bates is just below. Those two seem interchangeable to me, except that Colby is a bit more isolated.

Both Colby and Bates are in the top 50 of one "campus food" ranking. Not bad when you consider there are close to 3,000 four-year colleges in the US. Bowdoin is pretty consistently #1 if you Google college food rankings and look at multiple results surveys.

Citibank has selected Colby as the site for a pilot program this year to recruit students from small selective liberal arts colleges. In the past their formal college recruitment program has focused on the Ivy's and other large, very highly ranked national universities.

Because my son is an athlete, food quality is very important. Academics of course are the most important but for him food quality is a big consideration.

Bates has the best food I have ever eaten at a college. Bowdoin was second and Muhlenberg third. After that it ranged from bad to horrible.
